The white coloured moon shaped at your base of the nail is called as lunala but why do we have this lunala? What are this lunala?

Let's know,

The base moon shape at the base of your fingernail is known as lunula . The lunulae cover the bottom of your nail, just above your cuticle.

Lunalae is the part of your nail matrix. The matrix refers to the tissue just beneath your nail. It contains nerves, lymph and blood vessels. It also produces the cells that become the hardened nail plate, which is the thing what you see.

In some people it barely protudes and is only really visible on the thumb and big toe. The lunala looks white because the epidermis is thicker beneath the matrix and it blocks the pink colour from the blood vessels below.

So, the crescent moon or lunala is the part of the nail matrix that pokes out from under the flesh of your finger.
