Have you drawn a permanent tattoo on your body, which looks cool but have you ever thought, what makes the tattoo permanent?
Let's know,
Our skin consists of three layers epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. Epidermis sheds thousands of skin cells everyday. Hence, when we get a tattoo, the tattoo needles which are coated with colored pigment are inserted through the dermis into the epidermis. Which makes the tattoo pigment from getting shed away.
However, it's mainly our body's immune response to make the tattoo permanent. The tattoo needles make wounds in the skin which activates the immune response. Immune cells like macrophages, reach the wounded site and start to eat the small particles of coloured pigment and clean that area.
Bigger pigment particles that cannot be eaten by macrophages are absorbed by fibroblasts present in dermis. These fibroblasts along with some macrophages remain at the site making the tattoo permanent.
