Peanuts, although they has nuts in there spelling they aren't actually nuts, so what they are? Why they are known as nits although they are not nuts?

Here's why,

Peanuts are botanically legumes (seeds in long pods). But for culinary, research and nutritional purposes the peanuts are still nuts.

The answer to why there aren't nuts is they grow underground while the other nuts like walnuts and almonds grows on trees.

This is reason behind it and so, they are considered as legumes because they are edible seeds in enclosed pods. The beans and peas are also legumes.

However, peanuts are used a nuts in diets and foods.
