Let's know,
A round shaped manhole cover cannot slip through the opening. In other shapes there are inequalities. Diagonal of the square/rectangle shaped cover would proved to be troublesome, it may slip into the manhole and get struck in, etc.
Another reason is that, a round manhole cover has a smaller surface than a square one, thus less material is needed to cast the manhole cover, meaning lower cost.This is the reason due to which the manholes are circular in shape.
