Why does popcorn pop?

Do you remember those days, when you used to sit in a movie theatre with your favorite popcorn and enjoying the movie. But have you ever wondered why does popcorn pop?

Let's know,

As you might know, there are varieties of corns such as fieldcorn, sweetcorn and popcorn. How, the popcorn is only the corn which pops. There are three things in a kernel or popcorn seed that work together to form a perfect and tasty popcorn.

Those are an impermeable shell called pericarp, right water content and starch. When we heat that popcorn kernels, the water inside them forms into steam and starts to expand. While the starch inside turns into a gel like substance.

As it is enclosed, the expanding steam applies pressure on the shells. Eventually, when the shells cannot hold the pressure, it get burst which releases the steam and gel. When this gel comes in contact with air, it quickly solidifies forming fluffy popcorn. After this, you can add salt, butter, cheese, and whatever you want, mix it well and enjoy it.
